2024 Pre-budget Thoughts
The upcoming budget has generated more debate, speculation and calls from clients than any other I can remember. We discussed Labour’s fiscal plans in our post-election webinar (and generally, despite the noise, our opinions remain pretty much as they were then). But there has an awful lot of noise and clients are understandably wondering if they should be doing something. Trying to second-guess the budget is the fiscal equivalent of market timing – it’s very difficult to get right and the chances are that, at best, you’ll make the right call about half the time. Our advice is that your starting point should be to decide what you want to achieve, look at the best way to fund it and then look for the most tax-efficient way of releasing those funds. Reversing that process and letting the tax tail wag the investment dog too often ends in tears – or at least disappointment.
